Surf Lessons at Famara, Lanzarote

Practically every surf lesson on Lanzarote happens at one beach: Caleta de Famara on the north-west coast, more than seven kilometres of exposed beach break below the Famara cliffs. It is the island’s most accessible surf spot, and the schools there run two- and four-hour classes as well as multi-day courses, from €45 with equipment.

Good to know: Famara is exposed and works best outside the summer; in July and August it is often flat, and a lesson booked then can turn into a whitewater session. Most schools include pickup from Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise – the drive is around 30 to 40 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to book Timanfaya in advance?

Yes. Tickets for the Montañas del Fuego are sold online only and always for a specific date and time – you cannot simply turn up and buy one at the gate. Adult admission is €30 and includes the geothermal demonstrations and the coach route. If you book a guided tour, check whether that ticket is already included before you buy a second one.

Can I drive or walk through Timanfaya National Park myself?

No. The Ruta de los Volcanes through the park interior is a coach route of about 35 minutes, private vehicles are not allowed on it, and you stay seated for the whole loop. Buggy and quad tours advertised as “volcano tours” cross the volcanic landscape around the park, not the park itself – which is worth knowing before you compare prices.

Will we see dolphins – and are there whales off Lanzarote?

Dolphin sightings are common on the trips from Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, but these are wild animals and no operator can guarantee them. Be sceptical of “whale watching” in the marketing: the resident whale populations of the Canaries live in the deep channel between Tenerife and La Gomera, Europe’s first Whale Heritage Site. If seeing whales is the point of your holiday, that is the island group to book.

How do I get to La Graciosa, and how long does it take?

The ferry leaves from Órzola on the northern tip and crosses roughly six kilometres in 25 to 30 minutes, run by Líneas Marítimas Romero and Biosfera Express. The catch is the drive to Órzola: from Playa Blanca it is about an hour each way. If you are staying in the south, take an offer that includes the bus transfer, or you will spend more of the day in the car than on the island.

Which resort should I stay in?

Puerto del Carmen is the largest and liveliest, with the longest strip and about ten minutes from the airport. Costa Teguise is smaller, quieter and popular with families. Playa Blanca is the calmest of the three and closest to the Papagayo beaches and the Fuerteventura ferry, but it is spread out and hotels tend to cost more. Distances on Lanzarote are short, so none of the three cuts you off from anything.

When is the best time to visit, and does it rain?

Barely. Lanzarote is the driest of the Canary Islands – roughly 100 to 250 mm a year, about 85 % of it between December and March – with an annual average near 21 °C. What you will notice instead is the wind: the trade wind blows almost constantly and eases noticeably in September and October. Two consequences worth planning around: boat trips are cancelled for wind, not rain, and Famara is often flat in July and August, which is exactly when most people book a surf lesson.
