Lanzarote volcano hike from €44: terrain, footwear and the nine-kilometre question

Updated September 12, 2026 · 5 min read

Walkers following a path between dark volcanic slopes

The guided volcanic landscape hike, activity 400765, is listed from €44 for three hours, with 1,503 reviews and 4.8 stars in our September tour statistics. That makes it a well-reviewed option, but the more useful detail is in the itinerary: the operator describes nine kilometres on foot. Before deciding that three hours sounds easy, consider whether that distance over volcanic ground matches the walking you normally enjoy.

This is a hike through Los Volcanes Natural Park, in the landscape created by the Timanfaya eruptions. It is not the standard bus visit inside Timanfaya National Park. The similar names describe related geology, not interchangeable tickets. If you want the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario, choose a different excursion or book that visit separately.

Nine kilometres in three hours: ask what the duration covers

The booking page describes a relaxed pace, lava fields and craters, with a guide explaining the landscape. It also lists a small group of up to ten, guiding in Spanish or English, snacks and optional hotel transfers. The precise route and meeting arrangements are confirmed by the operator.

Nine kilometres divided by three hours is three kilometres per hour before allowing for explanations and pauses. That arithmetic does not prove the itinerary is impossible; it shows why the headline duration needs clarification. Ask whether your chosen departure follows the whole advertised distance and whether the quoted time includes stops and transport.

Do not book a tightly timed lunch or a flight transfer immediately afterwards. An approximate walking duration is a poor anchor for an appointment you cannot move. Knowing the expected return to the meeting point is more useful than collecting another adjective such as easy or leisurely.

Fitness means sustained walking, not just climbing

A modest slope can feel manageable while repeated steps on loose or uneven ground become tiring. Judge yourself against a recent walk of similar length, not against how comfortably you move around your hotel. The relevant questions are whether you can keep walking after the first hour and whether you are comfortable paying attention to your footing.

A guided group also changes the pace. You can ask questions and benefit from explanations, but cannot assume that every stop will match your preferred timing. Someone training for a fast hike may find the interpretation frustrating; someone wanting a short photo stop may find the distance excessive. Both can reasonably choose something else.

For mixed abilities, speak to the operator before booking everyone together. Describe the least confident walker’s usual distance and any difficulty with uneven surfaces. Ask how the group handles someone who needs to stop early. Do not assume a taxi can reach an arbitrary point on a walking trail.

Shoes: the operator’s requirement and the practical choice

The listing asks for closed-toe shoes and water and excludes sandals or flip-flops. Take that as a condition of this activity. It does not mean you need to buy heavy mountain boots for a single holiday outing. A familiar walking shoe with a gripping sole may be the more sensible choice; confirm unusual footwear with the operator.

Avoid testing a brand-new pair on the tour. The problem is not whether the shoes look suitable in a photograph, but whether your feet are comfortable after repeated steps. Keep footwear for the beach separate from the shoes you intend to walk in.

Use a small backpack so your hands stay free and your water remains accessible. Snacks are listed, but that does not specify a complete lunch or a menu suited to every dietary need. Confirm any food requirements beforehand and plan the rest of your meals independently.

Transfers can change the value of €44

The hotel transfer is optional in the description. Select your departure and pickup option before treating €44 as the total price. Check whether your accommodation is covered and whether pickup is at its entrance or another meeting point. Self-driving visitors should request the precise parking and meeting instructions.

For two adults, the starting-price calculation is €88 before any difference caused by the selected option. The five-hour Timanfaya bus tour starts at €59 per person. Its extra €15 per person buys a different activity, not simply a more comfortable version of the same walk.

Our catalogue also lists activity 431758, a three-hour volcanic trek from €47 with 961 reviews and 4.8 stars. Its short description includes tasting local products and white wine. That €3 difference is less useful than comparing the actual route, pickup and walking demands. See the options together under volcano tours.

Children and access: check the specific departure

No minimum age for this hike appears in our compact statistics. Operators set different limits, stated on their booking pages. Ask about your child’s eligibility and describe their actual walking experience. Enthusiasm for volcanoes is not a substitute for being comfortable over the advertised distance.

Likewise, the word relaxed does not establish wheelchair or pushchair access. Get a direct answer about the route before reserving if either matters. The official Tremesana and coastal walks have their own booking arrangements and terrain; they are not automatically easier substitutes.

Choose this hike when you want time on foot and an explanation of what you are walking through. Before paying, obtain the route, the distance for your departure and the return arrangements. Those three answers matter more than the difference between two nearly identical star ratings.
