Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise or Playa Blanca: where should you stay?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 4 min read
For most first-time visitors, Puerto del Carmen is the easiest all-round base: plenty of restaurants and many boat departures nearby. Choose Costa Teguise for watersports and access to the north, and Playa Blanca for sheltered southern beaches, Papagayo and the ferry to Fuerteventura. If your priority is seeing the whole island without driving, the 9-hour Full-Day Island Highlights Tour costs €51 and links the main volcanic and Manrique sights from one booking.

Puerto del Carmen: easiest without a plan
Pick Puerto del Carmen when restaurant choice, evening life and boat trips matter more than a quiet promenade. Puerto Calero’s submarine and marina are close, while dolphin speedboats leave from Puerto del Carmen itself. The drawback is that Papagayo and the northern Manrique sights sit at opposite ends of your sightseeing days.
Costa Teguise: north and wind
Costa Teguise suits surfers, windsurfers and visitors planning Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Haría and Teguise. It is a weaker choice if most of your wish list is Papagayo or Fuerteventura. Wind is part of its appeal for sport and a nuisance on a lazy beach day.
Playa Blanca: beaches and ferries
Playa Blanca is the practical base for Papagayo and the short ferry crossing to Corralejo. It feels more spread out, and north-island days are longer. Families who value sheltered coves over nightlife often prefer it, but no resort removes the need to check pickup coverage for every tour.
Our recommendation
Choose Puerto del Carmen if you are undecided, Costa Teguise for wind sports and northern sights, or Playa Blanca for Papagayo and Fuerteventura. If you want one base and one no-driving overview, book the island highlights day.
