The Manrique centres with children: which ones actually work

Updated September 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Turquoise underground lake lit by daylight through the opening of a lava tube

Lanzarote’s tourist centres are art and architecture first, and family attractions a distant second. Nobody says that on a booking page. It matters, because two of them are genuinely memorable for children and two will produce forty minutes of complaining followed by a bill.

One piece of good news applies everywhere in the CACT network: children aged 0 to 6 go free at every centre. A family of two adults and two under-sevens pays €34 at Jameos del Agua, not €68. That single rule changes which sites are worth including.

Jameos del Agua: the one they remember

This is the strongest of them for children, and the reason is the lake. A collapsed section of lava tube holds clear water in which Munidopsis polymorpha lives — a blind, white, pale crab found naturally nowhere else, small enough that children have to look properly to find them. That is a rare thing on a family day out: something that rewards patience rather than punishing it.

The site asks visitors not to throw coins or anything else into the water, which is the thing children most want to do, so say it before you get there rather than after. Swimming is not permitted in the lake or in the white pool, and the pool is the second thing they will ask about.

Two practical constraints from the official visitor information. Pushchairs are not allowed — the site directs parents to a baby carrier instead. And the volcanic tube, the changes of level and the stone paving limit accessibility generally; proper shoes matter more here than at any other centre. Entry is from €17, opening is 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM with last admission at 5:15 PM, and a visit runs 60 to 120 minutes. Our full write-up is in the Jameos del Agua visit guide.

Cueva de los Verdes: brilliant at seven, miserable at three

The cave is the other memorable one, and it is the one that most often goes wrong. CACT describes a route with uneven paths, stairs, narrow spaces and low ceilings, not suitable for reduced mobility and not recommended for anyone with claustrophobia. Adults over 1.80 m are warned about the ceilings. Pushchairs are not allowed and there is nowhere to leave one.

Add the shape of the visit: roughly 50 minutes underground, in a guided group, with no convenient point to step outside. A child who decides after ten minutes that they have had enough is still there for another forty. For a confident seven- or eight-year-old, a dark kilometre of lava tube with a genuine surprise at the end is one of the best hours on the island. For a toddler, it is the wrong purchase at €17.

Two details that only matter once you have children with you: the baby-changing facilities are in the restrooms outside the cave, so use them before you go down, and the guided commentary is given in Spanish and English. If your child needs to follow the explanation in another language, plan to translate as you go. Tickets are online only, with a fixed date and time. More detail sits in our Cueva de los Verdes guide.

The three short ones, ranked by how well they hold up

Casa Museo del Campesino is free, open 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and takes about 50 minutes. Free is the operative word: if it does not work for your group, you walk away having lost nothing. There is space to move, which after a cave is exactly what is needed.

Mirador del Río costs €9 for around 45 minutes. Children either love the drop to the sea and the island opposite or lose interest in ninety seconds. Short enough that either outcome is survivable, and covered in our Mirador del Río guide.

Jardín de Cactus is €9 for about an hour and is the one to think hardest about. It is beautiful and it is full of spines at exactly toddler height, on stepped terraces. With a child who stays close it is a pleasant hour; with a child who runs, it is an hour of saying no. See our Jardín de Cactus guide.

Where children are not the priority

The Foundation at Tahíche charges €10 for adults and €3 for children aged 7 to 12; it does not publish a rate for younger children, so ask at the counter rather than assuming they are free. The volcanic bubbles impress for a few minutes and the display material will not hold anyone under ten.

LagOmar at Nazaret is built into a quarry face with steps, unfenced changes of level and water. It is a holding-hands visit, not a watching-from-a-bench one.

And Montañas del Fuego at Timanfaya is a different proposition again — mostly seated, on a coach, at €30 per adult. What children make of it is set out in the Fire Mountains with children.

A day that works, and what it costs

Cueva de los Verdes at its booked morning slot, Jameos del Agua afterwards, Mirador del Río if the mood holds. Two adults and two children under seven pay €34 plus €34 plus €18 — €86 for the three, with the children free throughout. Book the cave slot first and build the rest around it, because it is the one that cannot be moved: CACT allows no changes and no refunds.

If your children are under about four, drop the cave entirely. Jameos, the free Campesino and an afternoon at the beach is a better day and costs €34.

Two honest cautions. Shade is limited at most of these sites and the walking surfaces are dark stone that holds heat — if you want advice on sun protection for a young child, ask a pharmacy or your paediatrician, not a travel page. And none of these are playgrounds: they are open volcanic sites with real drops and real water, so supervision is on you rather than on a barrier. Our broader guides cover Lanzarote with kids and Lanzarote with a toddler.
