The César Manrique Foundation in Tahíche: a house inside a lava flow

Updated September 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Wooden spiral staircase leading down into a plant-filled volcanic bubble in a Manrique house

Most Lanzarote itineraries treat the César Manrique Foundation as one more stop between the volcanoes and the north coast. It deserves better placement than that, because it is the only site on the island where you stand inside the idea rather than looking at the result. The house at Taro de Tahíche is where Manrique lived from 1968, and it is built into ground that was liquid rock less than 250 years ago.

The Foundation’s own visitor page gives general admission as €10, with €3 for children aged 7 to 12. It opens every day including public holidays from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and the ticket counter closes at 5:00 PM. The only closing day of the year is 1 January. The address is Taro de Tahíche, C/ Jorge Luis Borges 16.

What you are actually walking into

The Foundation describes the residence as five natural volcanic bubbles connected by tunnels excavated in the lava. Those bubbles are not rooms that were dug out. They are voids that formed when gas was trapped as the flow cooled, and the house uses them as they were found. One holds a swimming pool. Others held a dance floor, an oven and a barbecue.

The lava itself came from the eruptions of 1730 to 1736 — the same episode that produced the landscape you cross on a Timanfaya half-day tour. That connection is the part worth carrying around the house. The black field outside the window and the curved black ceiling above your head are the same event, separated only by whether the gas escaped or stayed trapped.

Above ground, the building follows a different logic: white walls, flat roof, large openings onto the lava — the same vocabulary you see in every village here, and the reason Lanzarote has no high-rises. Walking down from the upper level into the bubbles is the moment that makes the visit. Give it a few seconds rather than photographing it immediately, because the change in temperature and sound tells you more than the picture will.

Allow longer than the guidebooks suggest

An hour is a realistic minimum and 90 minutes is more comfortable if you read the material on display. Arriving after 4:00 PM is the common mistake. With the counter closing at 5:00 PM, a late arrival buys you the ticket but not the time, and the lower level is not somewhere you want to hurry.

The route involves stairs between levels and uneven volcanic surfaces underfoot. The Foundation’s page does not publish accessibility details, so if steps are a problem, telephone +34 928 843 138 before you set out rather than assuming. That applies to a good deal of Manrique’s work on this island; his architecture takes the ground as it found it, and the ground is rarely flat.

The joint ticket with Haría is the one real saving

Manrique left Tahíche in 1986 for a converted farmhouse in the palm valley at Haría, where he lived until his death in 1992. That house opened as a museum in 2013 and is run by the same Foundation, with the same hours and the same €10 price.

Buy the two separately and you pay €20 per adult. The joint ticket is €17, and €4 for children aged 7 to 12 instead of €6. The saving is modest, but the pairing is genuinely worth doing: Tahíche is the public statement and Haría is the private one, and the second is much quieter. Ask at the counter how long the joint ticket stays valid before you assume both houses fit into one afternoon.

Why no combined island pass includes it

This trips people up. The Foundation is not part of CACT Lanzarote, the island-council network that runs Jameos del Agua, the Cueva de los Verdes, the Jardín de Cactus and Mirador del Río. Different operator, different ticket office, separate payment.

So when somebody tells you to buy “a Manrique pass”, there is no such thing covering both organisations — and as of 2026 CACT does not sell a multi-centre ticket either. The arithmetic behind that is in our guide to combined tickets for the Manrique centres.

Guided tour or your own car?

The Legacy of César Manrique guided tour runs eight hours at €83 per person and takes in the Cactus Garden, Mirador del Río, the Monument to the Peasant, Jameos del Agua and the Foundation. It holds 4.7 stars across 220 reviews, which is a solid record for a full-day coach itinerary.

Driving the same five stops yourself costs roughly €45 per adult in admissions, since the Monument to the Peasant is free — plus the car, the fuel and the parking. The tour is therefore not an obvious overcharge, and the booking page is where you confirm which admissions are included, because that single line decides whether €83 is good value or not.

Choose the tour if you want the stops linked without driving, or if you would otherwise attempt this on a single hire-car day and run out of afternoon. Choose the car if you want to stay 90 minutes in Tahíche instead of the 45 a coach schedule allows. More options are listed on our César Manrique sights page, and the full-island alternative is in our César Manrique day tour comparison.

When to skip it

If your group has no interest in architecture or design, the Foundation will read as an expensive walk through someone’s old house. Children under about ten generally find the bubbles briefly exciting and the display material dull; what works and what does not is set out in our guide to the Manrique centres with children. And if your day already contains Timanfaya, do not add Tahíche to the end of it. Both deserve attention, and the second one will not get any.
